Playing with CELLO DRONES is an effective and enjoyable way
to develop your ear and improve your intonation. A drone is
a sustained tone, and playing or singing with a drone allows
you to hear and adjust intonation in relation to an ongoing
reference pitch. Tuning to a drone is also practice for listening
and adjusting when playing with others. Additionally, as in
many musical cultures, drones can serve as a background for
improvisation, providing a tonal atmosphere and harmonic basis
for melodic exploration.
This CD contains drones on all 12 chromatic pitches for tuning
and improvisation in major, minor, and modal scales. Each
track is approximately 6 minutes in length and consists of
5 sustained tones: 3 octaves of the tonic (the fundamental
scaletone) and 2 octaves of the 5th. Software techniques have
been used to ensure pitch accuracy. A=440Hz. As sustained
tones can create resonances in the speakers or in the room,
you may wish to explore the balance of tones at different
locations. The warmth and resonance of acoustic cello make
this recording a satisfying accompaniment to tuning and improvisation.
